Is there ANY insurance available that will cover a pregnancy that has already occurred?
I have been self employed for about 4 years and since I have excellent health (haven’t been in the hospital since birth, doctors a couple times in 28 years) I’ve never really cared much about heath insurance. My fiance’ and I recently relocated to Las Vegas from Idaho and she left her job with benefits over 63 days ago (which I read somewhere constitutes a sizeable gap or something). We plan to get married in the next week or so so that when one of us gets benefits we’ll both have them, however from all the reserach I’ve done, we’re pretty much out of luck on having this pregnancy covered.
We are probably going to have to go with Medicaid but I really don’t want to do that. Long story short, I’m wondering if there is EVER a situation in which pregnancy is not considered a pre-existing condition?
Additional info: she has yet to go to the doctor, we only know she is pregnant from an OTC test, we will be moving to Oregon in a week and that is where we will have the benefits/child.
Any info you could give me would be a big help, thanks
HIPAA only protects you if you change employers and were previously insured….we are not previously insured so HIPAA is not relevant, at least thats how I understand it.

I don’t know where you’ve been looking, but you should know that Federal law prohibits pregnancy from being considered a pre-existing condition, under HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.

why you move so much???
yes oregon does have the oregon health plan that she should be able to get.
EDIT- i don’t think the above answer is correct, they consider it a pre-existing condition, however oregon health plan is differnet.

Welfare insurance. That’s about it.
With group insurance, pregnancy is not pre-existing. So if you marry her, when you can get your own benefits, her pregnancy (read, delivery) will be covered.
No one is going to write an individual policy on her – it’s not just that they’ll exclude the pregnancy, they flat out won’t take her at all, while she’s pregnant.

“I’ve never really cared much about heath insurance.”
That’ll change after this experience, because you’ll likely end up spending more than what it would have cost to have coverage for the last 5-10 years. If she’s pregnant it’s a pre-existing condition. It doesn’t matter if she knows about it, a doctor knows about it, or anything else. If she’s pregnant before the coverage kicks in they won’t pay.

You have 2 options (well, 3 really)…
1) One of you gets a job that comes with health and maternity benefits. (Pregnancy is not considered pre-existing on a group policy.)
2) She goes on Medicaid (if she qualifies).
3) You start saving now and pay for the prenatal/delivery expenses out of pocket. Try negotiating a cash price with the doctors/hospital.
That’s about it. Sorry.
