.:*Lillie’s Mommy*:. asked:
I am 19 and my husband is 22. I applied for medicaid last week because I am 5.5 weeks pregnant and today I got a letter telling me that we were denied because our income is over the limit. We can hardly afford all of our bills at the moment, and now we have my medical bills on top of everything else! Not to mention the cost of the delivery and everything. What am I supposed to do? We live in Idaho and I am not aware of any other kind of insurance like Medicaid. My husbands employer offers health insurance but if we paid for that we wouldn’t be able to afford our other bills that have to be paid like our house payment and such. Please if you have any suggestions or advice….I am kinda freaking out. I feel guilty for putting us in this situation even tho I know it was both of us. Its just the hormones talking. Thank you very much in adv

See if the hospital you’re going to deliver has a program called or similar to “Charity Care.” Here’s some information:
Good Luck!

In Michigan we have health departments for people who can’t afford medical. Check it out and see if your city has one. Also there are women’s clinics where you pay according to your income. It seems like you would have something similar there.

In Idaho, there is a service that may be able to give you some assistance in finding low-cost prenatal and delivery care. Call 2-1-1.

I used to be a medicaid specialists so I must tell you for any state to deny a pregnant woman medicaid, they have to have a darn good reason. In Ohio the limit is %200 federal poverty. So do the calculations yourself to make sure you are over. Also, the state always gives some kind of deductions to the income, so call the county and ask what they are. Also, in Ohio we have what is called retro medicaid wher the insurance will go back 3 months from the date you applied, once you have the baby you will be put in a different income standard because of more people being in your home so if you find out you really are over income now, apply after the baby and it still may cover your hospital bills. One last thing, most county hospitals will have HCAP or something like it where your bills are based on your income. Good luck with everything and the baby.

Offer to take a cut in pay so you will qualify for medi-cal.
Your really too young to be married and pregnant. You might be able to go to a city or county hospital. Or, maybe you can deliver your baby a different and cheaper way, like with a nurse at home.
Check out all your options. And, Good Luck.
P.s. Don’t have more kids after this for a long, long time unless your more financially stable.
Welcome to Idaho, I faced the same problems when i got pregnant with my daughter, no insurance, no state help because i was $60 over the limit (yet i cared for my step daughter too…oh but her mother receives her help for that) Honestly your best bet would be to get a job where you can receive insurance after 90 days, you are still really early in your pregnancy so you can work well into it. I did this with my daughter and worked a week past her due date because i could not afford the medical bills to continually see the doctor, i went every other month may sound bad but unfortunatly its all i could do, the company insurance kicked in and covered all but the deductible and first few months. I am still paying on my medical bills for her and she is a year old now but at least most of the bills were taken care of and only 1500 on my plate. The 2-1-1 line is an option but did not help me as they just told me that medicaid would offer or tell me about a small co-pay if i was over the limit….they did not.

You need to reapply, under your state children’s health insurance plan. It might ONLY cover the prenatal & delivery costs, but they are MUCH more generous with income limits than Medicaid.
